Women In Blue

“Let’s play today in a such a manner that all that is visible is the colour blue”..

This is a dialogue from the movie Shabhaash Mithu by captain Mithali Raj (played by Tapsee Pannu)  just before the team goes out to play their World Cup finals. This is exactly how the Indian women’s cricket team performed during the semi-final match against Australia. What is even more overwhelming is the way the packed-Mumbai stadium cheered the Women in Blue.

I am personally not an ardent follower of any sport; but for us Indians cricket has always been an emotion, beyond just a game. Watching the highlights of the match gave me goosebumps. The 25-yr old Jemimah Rodrigues won our hearts not just with her bat; but also with her resilience and composed demeanor even after scoring a century, leading the team to victory in the semi-finals. Her winning speech is testament to what this win against the world No.1 Australian team means to the Indian team as a whole.

The 1983 World Cup Win had changed the face of Indian cricket, and hopefully today’s final match will be history repeating. Overall, it is a proud moment for women, as we witness the world sit up and take notice of a women’s match with so much pomp and pride. The very fact that two strong teams have emerged, beating the world champions is a revolution and testimony to the tireless efforts behind the scenes.

Whatever be the outcome of today’s match, there is going to be more power to our Women in Blue, and many more little ones blooming on the Indian grounds.
