Women In Blue

Image
“Let’s play today in a such a manner that all that is visible is the colour blue”..  This is a dialogue from the movie Shabhaash Mithu by captain Mithali Raj (played by Tapsee Pannu)   just before the team goes out to play their World Cup finals. This is exactly how the Indian women’s cricket team performed during the semi-final match against Australia. What is even more overwhelming is the way the packed-Mumbai stadium cheered the Women in Blue. I am personally not an ardent follower of any sport; but for us Indians cricket has always been an emotion, beyond just a game. Watching the highlights of the match gave me goosebumps. The 25-yr old Jemimah Rodrigues won our hearts not just with her bat; but also with her resilience and composed demeanor even after scoring a century, leading the team to victory in the semi-finals. Her winning speech is testament to what this win against the world No.1 Australian team means to the Indian team as a whole. The 1983 World Cu...

Eve's Dream

I read an interesting article written by a woman, in the same lines as the thoughts that were running in my mind. She spoke of the insecurity in the minds of men today about the women who surround their lives. The fear among some men about their genuine words, actions and gestures that may be misunderstood or misinterpreted as harassment. So today's blog is dedicated to the men who sincerely feel and treat women as equals. (I know this comes as a shocker to those of you who call me a feminist!!) When I see fathers and grandfathers taking care of kids in parks, while their mother's away at work, I can't help acknowledging that times have changed. The TV ads that depict men changing diapers for babies and husbands clearing dishes from t...

Happy Women’s Day???

I would say it is another of those “ Days ” which holds very little relevance in our country. Corporates and institutions celebrate the day with competitions and parties for their female employees, women who consider themselves free and independent may indulge in partying too to celebrate womanhood. But can you actually look around and swear that India is a safe country for women? I quote Jawaharlal Nehru who said you can tell the condition of a nation by looking at the status of its women. If that is the case, India is in a very sad state. I don’t deny that a large percentage of women have actually achieved economic and social independence over these years, and most of you women reading this note belong to that fortunate category. I am not writing here about the unfortunate unborn females or the illiterate women in our villages or the many other injustices that are meted out to women. I write here about an issue that concerns all women, for the simple reason that you are one....
