The Power of Silence

As a child I had noticed my mother react to undesirable situations with silence as a weapon. It was a strong weapon, it had the impact of making the others feel guilty for their words and actions. Certain things we see and hear repeatedly during our formative years actually make sense later in life. In today's noisy world, silence is more powerful than using words to prove our point.

When we are faced with uncontrollable factors, silence allows us to control the way we react and to choose our words and actions, lest we end up regretting. Today we have umpteen means to communicate, and that in turn gives us more reasons to embrace silence. Silencing news channels and social media apps have helped me channelise my emotions and energy into creative pursuits. Today when I'm depressed or angry I write or paint, this let's me disconnect from the world and connect with my inner self. Like a tortoise that retreats into it's shell, I face the negativity in my life by embracing creativity in solitude. Silence is affordable luxury, if only we realise the true value.

I'm sure my child will be the happiest if I decide to use the power of silence, one area I'm still working on. The impact of silence on Generation Alpha is a subject that would need thorough research. Nevertheless I would love to leave behind a legacy she would be proud to write about someday.
