Humanity - The Global Goal

The Earth has started the process of its last spin of this year. It is high time we humans start planning what changes we wish to make before the Earth begins its next orbit around the Sun. Nature and its elements are on duty throughout the year, performing what they have been doing for years without differentiating between countries or races. Every one of us have had our share of sunshines and stormy days.

Why then are humans so persistent on differentiating and dividing ourselves?
Are you Asian or from the West? Black, White, Yellow or Brown….
Are you North Indian or South Indian, vegetarian or non-vegetarian, Hindi-speaking or not?

And the list drills down to uncomfortable levels. It is indeed welcome if the purpose is to appreciate the variety in cultures; while it is seldom so. It is horrifying to read of the many hate crimes across the world based on race and colour. The recent instances of our own countrymen being lynched or beaten to death mistaking them for other nationalities are petrifying and makes one wonder where we are headed as a civilisation. We speak in length about how our country was subjected to torture and torment by the Englishmen who considered themselves superior owing to their colour; and almost seventy-five years later we continue to witness and tolerate such practices by our own people!

On one side, the rest of the world is standing up and taking notice of India as the fastest growing nation. We are witnessing Indians and Indian-origins around the world making stupendous achievements and winning laurels for our country. We are also happily witnessing the cross-cultural weddings and celebrations making our country a cosmopolitan village like never before. But if humans forget humanity and compassion and follow individualistic pursuits, we will be dragging our nation behind and rendering all the developmental efforts futile.

Let us start the New year by making small changes in the way we look at our fellow beings, let us embrace the uniqueness
and place humanity above all. It is not our differences that divide us, but our inability to recognize, accept and celebrate those differences. Let us pass on this important message to our little ones at home.

Happy New Year to all of us humans!
